SPARK Publications originally launched in 1998 as SPARK Enterprises, a home-based graphic design business. Beginning with that first week, the firm’s founder, Fabi Preslar, made a commitment to giving back to the community when she took on pro bono work for several nonprofits. The company continues that tradition by offering reduced rates to nonprofit organizations and taking on several pro bono projects each year with a focus on women’s issues and entrepreneurship.
Over the next eight years, the firm grew out of its home office and took on new employees, clients, and services. In 2007, the firm rebranded with with a new dba, SPARK Publications, to build a niche in long-form publication design, including magazines, catalogs, and custom-published books. Fabi led product and revenue diversification, and broadened the breadth of clients to create a growing, stable base of business for the company. In 2008, Larry Preslar, Fabi's husband, resigned from his 25-year post at the Charlotte Observer to join the firm as creative director. His skill and experience boosted design capacity to an all-time high and enabled the firm to add digital publications and websites to its service line.
As the firm continued to gain recognition on a national and international level for its award-winning publications, many clients expressed a desire for public relations consultation and implementation. In early 2011, SPARK Publications began offering media relations, social media training and implementation, and marketing communications consulting to its book clients to help them gain exposure for their books. The firm’s products and services continually evolve with technological advancements, market needs, and creative solutions.
The firm's core mission is to transform its clients' visions into beautiful and marketable publications, engaging promotional pieces, and effective public relation campaigns. This mission is summed up in the tagline. Create. Design. Brag.
