My First Life, a Memoir by Margaret Mordukhovich

“A powerful story of resilience that provides firsthand insights into life in the Soviet Union. Over the course of this decades-spanning remembrance, Mordukhovich offers an accessible account that provides ample context for its myriad historical and geopolitical references, despite its brisk format; it’s divided into more than 50 chapters of no more than five pages each, which effectively aids readability. The clear emphasis on reader engagement is only enhanced by a wealth of maps and family photographs, which date from the early 20th century to the present.” — Kirkus Review

What SPARKed your interest in writing this book?

In My First Life, I wanted to share not just my family’s history, but our story in a broader historical perspective. Life in Russia and the Soviet Union was difficult for generations—especially during Stalin’s time—and the discrimination Jewish people faced for years shaped so many lives. I wanted to give a voice to those who are no longer here, like my mother, and to honor those who endured, survived, and preserved their identity and dignity in inhumane circumstances.

What part of the writing/publishing process was harder than expected? How did SPARK Publications help?

I think SPARK Publications did a great job. English is my second language, and they gave me confidence that my words were well-written. The process took longer than I expected because of the developmental homework, but I liked it.

What services did SPARK Publications provide, and how did they bring out the best in your book?

SPARK Publications helped with developmental editing, copy editing, cover and back cover design, interior page design using my family photos, and creating a historical tone for my memoir. They handled all the prepress and publishing essentials to get my book ready for print-on-demand. I really love the cover—it was a back-and-forth process, but it turned out beautifully. Their copy editing helped a lot, and they guided me through everything until the book was finished.

How will this experience and your book impact your life moving forward?

I’m getting unexpected and wonderful reviews on Amazon. I thought my book would resonate with people who had similar life experiences, but I’ve received reviews from places like Spain—from a journalist I’ve never met—calling my book “a gem.” That melts my heart.

I want this book to reach more people because, sadly, many of the themes still resonate today. I started writing it 10 years ago, never expecting it to feel so timely now. But many people have told me it is, and I believe that too. This is just the beginning of the journey, and I’m excited to see where it leads.

What advice would you give to a business owner or thought leader who wants to write a book?

Just sit down and start writing. One day after another, you will write and rewrite. If you have a message to share, do it. This may be your one opportunity.

Margaret’s thoughts on working with SPARK Publications:

“I had a great experience with SPARK Publications. They were professional, understanding, and went the extra mile to make my book the best it could be. Over the past year, I traveled constantly—really all over the world—and they worked with my timelines and were incredibly patient. It was a very positive experience, and I highly recommend them.”

Where can readers find more of your work?

I have a new website, my-first-life.com, beautifully designed by my daughter’s web design firm, Woland Web.

What are some of your hobbies or affiliations?

I have been writing and publishing all my life. Even as a teenager, I was invited on TV, and someone even turned my poetry into a song. I still write poetry today.
Beyond writing, I love photography—especially wildlife photography. I travel a lot, and my basement is covered with portraits of birds and animals from Africa, Antarctica, and all over the world.

I spent the first half of my life in a closed cage—the Soviet Union—where travel was not allowed. When those doors finally opened, I couldn’t be stopped, and I continue to travel even when it’s difficult.

By education, I’m a mathematician. By trade, a computer scientist. I’ve worked my whole life. I appreciate good people, and I’m blessed with a great family and many friends. My life has never been easy, but all in all, it’s been a good life.
